আমরা দুই বোন অয়ন্তিকা রায় (অনু) ও অরিত্রিকা রায় (রেনু)। আমরা দুজনেই জন্ম থেকেই কানে শুনতে পাই না। আমাদের মা বাবা দুজনেই দুর্গাপুরে সাহস থেকে এক বিশেষ পদ্ধতির ট্রেনিং নিয়ে প্রচন্ড পরিশ্রম করে আমাদের কথা বলা শিখিয়েছেন। এখনও আমরা বহু শব্দের মানে বুঝতে পারি না বা উচ্চারন করতে পারি না। কিন্তু মা বাবা এখনও আমাদের প্রতিটি শব্দের মানে ও উচ্চারন শেখাচ্ছেন। এতে তাদের কোনও ক্লান্তি নেই। শুধু কথা বলা নয়, তার সাথে আমাদের আঁকা, ব্যায়াম, নাচ, কম্পিউটার ইত্যাদি শিখিয়েছেন। দুর্গাপুরের সাহসের অনুপ্রেরণা ও মা বাবার অক্লান্ত পরিশ্রমে আমরা বর্তমানে সমাজের মূল স্রোতে চলতে পারছি। এটাই আমাদের কাছে অনেক বড় পাওনা।
We are two sisters – Ayantika Roy (Anu) and Aritrika Roy (Renu) – from Asansol, West Bengal. We are both deaf from birth with a profound hearing loss of 105 decibels in both ears. We were not supposed to speak but our parents taught us to speak through the rigorous method of oral-aural rehabilitation they learnt at SAHAS in Durgapur. Our parents worked very hard with us to teach us to talk and become oral. Even today we cannot understand the meaning of a lot of words and have difficulty in pronouncing those words. But our parents patiently teach us the meaning of the words and their pronunciation even to this day. It is incredible how they work so hard with complete dedication so that we can talk and interact comfortably. We have not only learnt to speak but also pursue a host of other activities like dance, yoga, art and computers. It is all due credit to SAHAS for the motivation and our parents’ tireless dedication that we are able to live a normal mainstream life. This is the greatest gift we have got from SAHAS and our parents.
